Diplomatic relations were established on November 23, 1992.
In 1993, the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Kazakhstan was opened in Almaty, and in 2018, it relocated to Astana (now Nur-Sultan). The diplomatic mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan commenced operations in Tashkent in 1996.
Since 2018, General Consulates of the Republic of Uzbekistan have been established in Almaty, and since 2019, in Aktau.
From 1991 onwards, there have been 32 reciprocal high-level visits (10 since September 2016). Additionally, the leaders of both states regularly convene within the framework of international and regional multilateral events (12 since 2016).
On September 12, 2016, a working visit by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, to Samarkand took place, during which he met with the Acting President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev.
On March 22-23, 2017, a State visit by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, to the Republic of Kazakhstan occurred. During this visit, a Joint Declaration was adopted to further deepen strategic partnership and strengthen neighborly relations. Additionally, 12 intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents were signed, along with a package of agreements in the field of trade and economic cooperation amounting to $839.5 million.
On April 29, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh. Mirziyoyev, made a working visit to the South Kazakhstan Region, where he met with N. Nazarbayev.
On September 16-17, 2017, a reciprocal State visit by the President of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, to Uzbekistan took place.
On March 15, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, visited Kazakhstan for a working visit to participate in the first Consultative Meeting of the Heads of Central Asian States.
On March 21, 2018, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, made a working visit to Uzbekistan (Samarkand).
On July 6, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, made a working visit to Kazakhstan to participate in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Astana and the opening of the International Financial Center “Astana.”
On October 20, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, visited Kazakhstan (Saryagash, Turkistan Region) during a working visit.
On April 14-15, 2019, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (since March 20, 2019), K.K. Tokayev, made a State visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan.
On November 28-29, 2019, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N. Nazarbayev, made a working visit to Tashkent to participate in the Second Consultative Meeting of the Heads of Central Asian States.
On May 14, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in the Belt and Road International Cooperation Forum in Beijing, China.
On June 9, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, took part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Astana.
On September 10, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in the plenary session of the First Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Science and Technology in Astana.
On October 11, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, took part in the meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Heads of State Council in Sochi.
On December 26, 2017, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in an informal summit of the CIS Heads of State in Moscow.
On June 10, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, took part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao, China.
On September 3, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in the VI Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyz Republic.
On December 6, 2018, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in an informal summit of the CIS Heads of State in St. Petersburg.
On April 25, 2019, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in the 2nd Belt and Road International Cooperation Forum in Beijing, China.
On June 14, 2019, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, K.K. Tokayev, participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek.
On June 15, 2019, in Dushanbe, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, K.K. Tokayev, participated in the Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
On October 11, 2019, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, K.K. Tokayev, participated in the CIS Heads of State Summit in Ashgabat.
On October 15, 2019, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, and the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.A. Nazarbayev, participated in the VII Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States in Baku.
On December 5-6, 2021, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, made a state visit to Kazakhstan, where they made a historic decision to elevate bilateral strategic partnership to the level of allied relations.
In addition, the Presidents of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan hold telephone conversations on current issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
